Charlize Theron confronts her skeletons in Dark Places trailer

A new trailer for the second Gillian Flynn adaptation Dark Places has arrived online. Like its predecessor Gone Girl, it seeks to explore the human experience in the most bleak way possible.

The film stars Charlize Theron as a troubled soul called Libby Day, who witnesses the brutal murder of her family at age seven, and points the accusatory finger at her older brother. Years later she’s approached by an interfering true crime geek who begins to pick at her fractured recollection of that horrific night, convincing her that she might be wrong…

Whereas last year’s thriller was directed by master of the macabre, David Fincher, the latest Flynn feature hails from French filmmaker Gilles Paquet-Brenner, whose previous movie was Parisian war drama Sarah’s Key. How will he fare with these particularly Dark Places? Check out the new trailer below:

The rest of the starry cast includes Nicholas Hoult, Christina Hendricks, Chloe Grace Moretz and Corey Stoll, who all make brief appearances in the trailer, which thankfully doesn’t give the game away. Hinting at Libby’s murky past, it leaves enough mysteries unanswered to warrant a trip to the cinema.

Dark Places opens on August 7 in the US, with no confirmed UK release date.
