This is why Zack Snyder didnt hide Doomsdays role in Batman v Superman

Marketing campaigns for big blockbuster movies can be a tricky thing. These days we normally get three trailers for a big release, each one revealing a little more of the plot as the film nears its opening date. In the case of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, some have been worried that too much was unveiled (opens in new tab) in the most recent trailer, but director Zack Snyder disagrees.

Speaking with The Daily Beast (opens in new tab) about the reveal of Doomsday, Snyder noted that: “I know what’s in the movie, so I know there’s other stuff. We had a long conversation about just taking ownership of that, of giving it to the audience in a controlled way that I felt was consistent with the escalation of the campaign.

“He [Doomsday] has his own mythology… so that has to be explored. To us it really made sense to give him to the audience now. I really wanted to make the audience a promise that… though I’m super excited and happy and fulfilled by the conflict of Batman and Superman, there’s also a bigger world to start to think about.”

The bigger world Snyder refers to is of course the DC extended universe, and it’s clear the director is excited about how it’s shaping up; “It is constantly evolving, but we’re starting to get a handle on where we’re going with the world. The rules can be the rules, and the movie can exist in a closed universe… it allows us to tie things together. It allows for a coherent universe, which is important. I think that makes the experience a little more satisfying because we know where we’re going, so the misdirects can be stronger and the reveals can be bigger.”

On the one hand, if Doomsday’s mythology is yet another plotline Batman v Superman is concerning itself with, it feeds into the fear that the movie will be overstuffed. On the other, Snyder has the benefit of having seen the entire movie while we’ve only seen about 5-6 minutes of pieced together footage, and judging and speculating so much from so little can be detrimental. Either way, we’ll find out for sure just how much of Batman v Superman we’ve already seen in a little over two months time.

Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Diane Lane, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Laurence Fishburne and Amy Adams, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will arrive in UK and US cinemas on March 25, 2016.
