A true Psychonaut knows the best way to understand an issue is to go back to its roots, preferably by jumping around a bit and using lots of impressive psychic powers. With crowdfunding nearly finished for Psychonauts 2 (opens in new tab), Double Fine and Sony announced (opens in new tab) that they’re bringing the PS2 version of the original Psychonauts to PS4 this spring.

Psychonauts was originally released in 2005, the first project from game director Tim Schafer and other former LucasArts developers. It follows the mind-diving exploits of a young circus acrobat and budding psychic named Raz as he learns the secrets of Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp.

With the PS2 version of Psychonauts headed to PS4 (here are all the other PS2 games available on PS4 (opens in new tab)), that means PS4 will eventually be the only console where you can play every Psychonauts: Psychonauts, Psychonauts 2, and Psychonauts: The Rhombus of Ruin (opens in new tab), a standalone PlayStation VR exclusive which bridges the events of the two main games.

Judging by the screenshots, it looks like Psychonauts will get improved resolution and clearer textures on PS4. But be warned if you previously played Psychonauts on Steam: that version was updated with a newer, less-sadistic Meat Circus level in response to player complaints. The original version has fewer checkpoints and is significantly more difficult overall. Just think of it as a one-level Nightmare Mode.
