Star Wars: The Force Awakens on VHS is beautiful, even if you cant buy it

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (opens in new tab) may be a modern-day movie, but it traces its lineage to the days when ‘be kind, rewind’ was common parlance, and grainy picture was fixed with a good smack to the side of a CRT TV. It’s a fitting tribute then that A/V artist Matthew Dix has created a fully-functional VHS version of the film, which he showcased this week on his Instagram account, Offtrack Outlet (opens in new tab):

Hope everybody is having a good day today and letting their inner child come out. Happy May 4th everyone ✨🌑 oh and 7000 followers?? You guys rock! @daisyridley (opens in new tab)

The detail on the cover is really exceptional. Not only would I totally believe that this copy came straight out of yesteryear, but the design is also right in line with the trilogy set released in 1995. And this isn’t the only time Dix has created this sort of art – he’s already created the box for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (opens in new tab) as well:

“I rebel…” What did you guys think of the Rogue One trailer? (opens in new tab)

Sadly, despite the implications of a username with “outlet” in the name, Dix does not have mass quantities of the VHS available for sale. I doubt Disney’s legal team would look kindly on such behavior anyway. Still, it’s nice to know this sort of trickery can be done, and maybe it’ll inspire you to make your own. May the Force be with you, fans.
