The Goosebumps book series by RL Stine isn’t just getting a movie adaptation starring Jack Black – it’s also getting a video game tie-in. I know, I know, tie-ins are almost uniformly terrible. But rather than slapping the Goosebumps label on a mini-game collection (opens in new tab) or something equally tone-deaf, Goosebumps: The Game – from developer WayForward – looks like a proper text-based adventure with a high fps (frights per sentence) rate. Take a look:
As you can see, most of the action takes place in freeze-frame animated sequences, while text describes what’s happening. I don’t know about you, but that’s exactly what I want in a game based on a series of books that stirred my imagination when I was younger. And while they share the same source of inspiration, the game and film are not telling the same story, which thankfully means we don’t have to call it Goosebumps: The Books: The Movie: The Game.
Goosebumps: (just) The Game will available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, 3DS and PC starting October 13. The Goosebumps movie will follow along right behind, haunting theaters on October 16.
