Bastion sells 500,000 copies, but Supergiants follow-up might not be Bastion 2

Bastion was perhaps the biggest small game of 2011, as the indie title took many players on a wild (heavily narrated ride) ride. We ranked the clever title as one of the best downloadable games of the last year (opens in new tab), and it seems many agreed with us. After launching on PC and 360 this summer, the creators revealed they’ve sold 500,000 copies, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’ll be a sequel, as one interview revealed.

Speaking with Eurogamer (opens in new tab), Supergiant Games’ Greg Kasavin spoke about how liberating the big sales were, “Bastion has performed well enough to give us the resources to create another game on our own terms, meaning we can self-fund the project and take the time we need to get it right.” Kasavin was pretty quiet on what that next thing would be, but don’t assume it’s Bastion 2. “We always intended for Bastion to be a stand-alone game,” he mentioned, though he didn’t dismiss the possibility of something new in the Bastion universe at some point.

As exciting as news of a new title from Supergiant is, don’t expect a reveal any time soon. Kasasvin pointed out that Bastion was in development for a year before it was shown, and thanks to Bastion’s continued success, they currently can afford to take their time. We just hope whatever that new game is still has a dynamic narrator.

UPDATE: Our friendly friends at Supergiant were quick to mention via Twitter (opens in new tab) that, “It’s too early to say what’s next for us.” So we altered this story accordingly.
