Harrison Ford gives his thoughts on Star Wars: The Force Awakens ending

If you’re waiting to experience Star Wars: The Force Awakens (opens in new tab) for the first time on your sweet home theater setup (opens in new tab), take heed: this article includes a significant spoiler for the film.

Still in? Ok, good. While many fans were heartbroken by Han Solo’s death at the end of his son’s lightsaber in The Force Awakens, Harrison Ford was pleased by his beloved character’s exit from the series. The actor outlined his thoughts on the final scenes of Episode 7 in a Tumblr Q&A (opens in new tab) hosted by Entertainment Weekly.

“I think it’s a fitting use of the character,” Harrison wrote. “I’ve been arguing for Han Solo to die for about 30 years, not because I was tired of him or because he’s boring, but his sacrifice for the other characters would lend gravitas and emotional weight.”

Ford isn’t just hopping on board the Han death wagon now. He really did want the smuggler to meet his end (opens in new tab) in Return of the Jedi, saying his demise would “give it some [emotional] bottom”. Though he did admit in an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he was now glad Han Solo survived the original trilogy.

Elsewhere in the Q&A, Ford reveals that, unlike Indiana Jones, he doesn’t mind snakes (opens in new tab), and that Rey actress Daisy Ridley is in fact cuter than him (opens in new tab). “But it’s close.”
