Russell Crowe could make directorial debut with 77

Russell Crowe is looking to get behind the camera and make his directorial debut with 1970s crime drama 77 .

The LA Confidential actor, who most recently headed up Paul Haggis’ jailbreak drama The Next Three Days , is also planning on starring in the film.

Based on a story by Confidential ’s Jame Ellroy, the film revolves around the as-yet unsolved homicide of an LAPD officer in 1974.

The story will be told via two police officers of different ethnic backgrounds who are caught up in the ensuing battle between the Symbionese Liberation Army and the LAPD in Los Angeles.

Seeing as Crowe has worked with some of the best directors in Hollywood history (Ridley Scott, Curtis Hanson, Peter Weir), we’re sure some of their good habits have rubbed off on him.

Which bodes well for the Aussie filmmaker, especially as he’s sticking to the terrain he knows best with a crime drama in a macho world. 77 sounds right up his street.
