Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events season 2 announced with a warning and a puzzle

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is, in many ways, an unconventional TV show, so it makes sense that Netflix would use an unconventional method to announce that the show has officially been renewed for a second season. Take a look at the announcement video, which contains both a warning and a puzzle:

If you pull the highlighted text out of the video, you get www.vastlyfrighteningdecision.com (opens in new tab). (Hey, no one said it was a particularly difficult puzzle.) If you visit that site, you’ll see a series of gifs from the show’s first season, plus a letter from Lemony Snicket himself that reads as follows:

Daniel Handler, executive producer of the show and the actual writer of the books it’s based on (Handler uses Lemony Snicket as a pen name, and Patrick Warburton plays a fictionalized version of Snicket on the actual show), actually told Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab) a couple of months ago that he and the writers were already working on season 2, but it’s nice for fans to hear official confirmation from Netflix.

The show stars Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, and Louis Hynes. There’s no word yet on exactly when season 2 will debut on Netflix, but considering the first season premiered in January 2017, it seems logical it would take about a year to get all of the new episodes completed and ready for consumption, so I’d guess we’ll see it in January 2018. In the meantime, check out this cool video that compares the Netflix series to the 2004 movie starring Jim Carrey:
