Injustice 2 (opens in new tab) developer NetherRealm has some big plans for its superpowered sequel; we’ve seen how the fighting game will let you customize DC heroes with gear and armor, but creative director Ed Boon has also hinted at the number of DLC characters coming down the pipeline, as well as some real-money transactions players could choose to make (or not make).
In an interview with IGN (opens in new tab), Boon said that the studio will “certainly be more aggressive than we’ve been in the past” with regards to selling more game content. “With DLC characters, we’ve had four with Mortal Kombat (opens in new tab), six with Injustice (opens in new tab), eight with Mortal Kombat X (opens in new tab), and with Injustice 2 we plan on continuing that pattern.” So … *counts fingers* that sounds like a planned 10 characters for Injustice 2 – if Boon literally means increases of two characters per game when he says “pattern.” Or he could just mean growth in general.
As for all that gear the roster will be wearing, Boon noted that some players “won’t want to invest months and months of their time” unlocking everything. The team is still considering the best way to balance the game, but told IGN they’re at least considering a pay-to-unlock model. “We have ideas in our head of the things we’d like to consider but [we] certainly haven’t nailed down this is going to be the way to do it,” he said.
Mortal Kombat X featured microtransactions such as Easy Fatalities and the ability to unlock everything in the Krypt, so this isn’t exactly unknown territory for NetherRealm. Hopefully we won’t have to wait until Injustice 2 launches for Xbox One and PS4 in 2017 to find out more about these potential microtransactions and extra fighters.
