Game of Thrones season 7 delayed so that winter can properly arrive

Bad news for Game of Thrones fans eager to see how season 7 will pick up from that great season 6 finale (opens in new tab). Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss said on the UFC Unfiltered (opens in new tab) podcast (you know, your typical source for Game of Thrones news) that season 7 will likely air later than the usual April window.

If you haven’t been watching the show or paying attention to this most recent season, you might want to hold off on reading why Benioff and Weiss have pushed production back, as it’s somewhat spoilery. It’s a very vague spoiler, mind you, but considering how precious the twists and reveals of this show can be, I figure at least a little warning is in order.

Okay, with that out of the way: The reason the show could be premiering at a later date is that by the end of season 6 (opens in new tab), the foretold arrival of winter has finally come. “That means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more,” the duo said. “So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.”

And you thought I was just being cheeky with that headline.
