Guillermo del Toro says canceling P.T. was “moronic”

Hideo Kojima and film director Guillermo del Toro were collaborating on P.T. and Silent Hills (opens in new tab) until Konami canceled the project, and del Toro was disappointed (opens in new tab). That much we knew. But del Toro took Kojima’s celebration at The Game Awards (opens in new tab) last night to truly cut loose on Kojima’s former employer for pulling the plug.

It’s impossible to separate the phenomenon that P.T. became from the way Konami handled it. The looping horror experience is still inspiring players and creators, but a lot of its popularity came from the very fact that Konami tried to quietly shut it down and pull it off the PlayStation Store after the company fell out with Kojima.

Del Toro has plenty of reason to be upset either way, even if the imbroglio did eventually lead to him starring as a pod baby savior (opens in new tab) in Death Stranding (opens in new tab), Kojima Productions’ first independent project. Or if you want that boiled down into del Toro’s fundamental argument…
