Meg LeFauve on Captain Marvel: “We dont want the Superman curse”

With Captain Marvel finally on the table over at Marvel HQ, the studio is at long last ready to give a female superhero top billing in her own movie. Screenwriter Meg LeFauve has been discussing the challenges involved in bringing such a character to the big screen and has said avoiding ‘the Superman curse’ is a priority.

“We have not started yet,” said LeFauve to Collider (opens in new tab). “We just got the phone call to come over to Marvel. But for me personally, the wonderful thing about her and the challenge of her is going to be that she’s a female superhero. And that is awesome because she’s so powerful, and how hard is that going to be because she’s so powerful?”

“We don’t want the Superman curse,” continues LeFauve, in reference to the perceived issue of Superman’s virtually limitless powers detracting from the dramatic tension. “What’s her vulnerability? That’s what we have to figure out.”

No casting has been announced for the role as yet, but the rumour mill currently has Rebecca Ferguson as the frontrunner (opens in new tab). Captain Marvel will arrive in cinemas on March 8 2019.
