Bloodstained is now the most-Kickstarted video game ever

After two years at the top of the Kickstarter heap, Torment: Tides of Numenera has yielded its throne to a vampire caricature of Koji Igarashi. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is now the most-funded video game (opens in new tab) in Kickstarter history.

Bloodstained’s funding is nearing $4.5 million with 28 hours left to go, leaving behind Torment’s final total of $4,188,927 by a comfortable margin. Only one announced stretch goal remains, promising to add randomly generated “Roguelike Dungeons” to the game if the campaign reaches $5 million. The last days are frequently some of the most lucrative for Kickstarter projects, so Bloodstained may well get there.

Going back to the original pitch, Igarashi (the director of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and former Castlevania series steward) said he had already secured “funding for about 90 percent of the game,” provided there was enough of a market for it. In other words, the Kickstarter was more about proving demand (opens in new tab) than raising funds.

Of course, that may not have accounted for the possibility that Bloodstained would not only exceed its fundraising goal, but become the most succesful video game Kickstarter ever. You never know, though – maybe Yooka-Laylee (opens in new tab) will put on another burst of speed and make it a short-lived record.
