Will Smith wants Deadshot to be Batman… wait, WHAT?

Actors regularly drop not-so-subtle hints in interviews about superheroes they’d quite like to play. It doesn’t mean it’s going to come true, or even that they’ve been offered a role, but it’s a ton of fun regardless for us to speculate on the possibility. One recent example of this surfaced at this weekend’s MTV Movie Awards (opens in new tab), when Will Smith coughed up a big one about his involvement in the DC Extended Universe.

Currently, Smith is involved in reshoots (opens in new tab) for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (opens in new tab), Warner Bros’ next comic book venture that rallies together a bunch of supervillains under the Task Force X banner to tackle other supervillains. Smith plays the team’s sniper Deadshot. But just because he’s one of the bad guys, doesn’t mean he’s not keen to switch sides should the opportunity arise. When asked about taking the character forward, he revealed that he’d love to see Deadshot slip into the Batsuit:

“There was one of the comics… Bruce Wayne got injured, and I think Deadshot came in for a couple of them, you know. He had to throw on the Batsuit. So I’m just saying, if they’re gonna draw on that…I wouldn’t reject it. I’m a team player. If they need me in the suit, I’m in it.”

There is a comic that includes Deadshot pretending to be Batman, a ruse that doesn’t last long when his motives prove to be quite different to Bruce Wayne’s. It’d be an interesting curve for the character to take, and would be a decent set-up for a major Bat vs. Bat battle. Will it happen though? “They [Warner Bros./DC] don’t tell you anything,” Smith said of the studio’s future plans. Fingers crossed?

Directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman, Suicide Squad will open in the UK and US on August 5, 2016.
