Gwent standalone game leaked by trademark application

The best card game within a game from 2015 may shed its RPG trappings soon: Nerdleaks (opens in new tab) has spotted an EU trademark application for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, complete with a fancy logo, from The Witcher 3 (opens in new tab) creator CD Projekt.

The trademark application (opens in new tab) was filed on June 6 by CD Projekt, according to the European Union Intellectual Property Office. The document is in Polish, duh, but according to Google translate (and the fact that I have a pretty good idea what “komputer” means) it will indeed be a video game, rather than a physical game. For that you’ll still need those limited edition Gwent decks (opens in new tab).

CD Projekt revealed back in March that its development studio, CD Projekt Red, was working on “a new type of video game format (opens in new tab) previously unexplored by the studio” with plans to release it some time this year. A dedicated Gwent game would fit the bill, and would give the studio a chance to address some of the understandable balance issues present in the Witcher 3’s version. I just hope it’s allowed to shine Hearthstone-like on mobile devices.

CD Projekt Red will be showing something new at E3 and it won’t be Cyberpunk 2077, according to Eurogamer (opens in new tab), so we may get to see Gwent: The Witcher Card Game very soon.
